About Yves Saint Laurent

Yves Saint Laurent was an Algerian-born French designer considered one of the most talented designers of the 20th century. Yves was born to a prominent family and inherited his love of fashion from his Spanish born mother. In 1953, Yves won third prize in a sketch contest for young designers. Soon after, Yves enrolled in the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture, though he left after only a few months. Saint Laurent eventually wound up working for acclaimed designer Christian Dior. When Dior died in 1957, Saint Laurent found himself head designer of Dior at only 21 years old.

Yves' Spring 1958 collection saved Dior from financial collapse and helped Yves become an international success. This new look of Dior was known for the 'trapeze dress,' which had narrow shoulders and flared at the bottom. This collection would be Saint-Laurent's most successful for the Dior line. In 1960, he was called to serve in the French Army. Yves lasted only twenty days in the army before winding up in a French mental hospital, where he found out he had been fired from Dior. During this time he received large amounts of sedatives and electroshock therapy.

After his release from the hospital, Yves and his lover began their own fashion house. The 1960s and 70s saw this new fashion house popularizing the beatnik look, safari jackets, and the creation of the classic tuxedo suit for women, called 'Le Smoking' suit. The Saint Laurent house was also the first house to put out a full ready-to-wear line. Yves opened his first store in Paris in 1966, where his first customer was actress Catherine Deneuve.

Saint Laurent was a member of the "jet set" and staple of the Paris and New York club scenes, often spending time at Studio 54 and Regine's. In 1983, he was the first living fashion designer to ever receive a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. However, as the years progressed, Yves became more dependent on alcohol and drugs and was eventually unable to handle the pressures of designing. In 1987, he turned over the ready-to-wear line to his assistant. In 2002, Saint Laurent officially retired, spending most of his time at his homes in Normandy and Morocco. Saint Laurent died on June 1, 2008 of brain cancer. It was written of Saint Laurent that he was, "The most consistently celebrated and influential designer of the past twenty-five years, Yves Saint Laurent can be credited with both spurring the couture's rise from its sixties ashes and with finally rendering ready-to-wear reputable."
