Tory Burch was born and raised in the Main Line of Philadelphia and attended the University of Pennsylvania, where she majored in Art history. Burch moved to New York City after graduation where she worked for Zoran, a Yugoslavian designer. She then went to Harper's Bazaar magazine followed by a stint as a copywriter for Polo Ralph Lauren. In 1995, Burch began working with wedding dress czar, Vera Wang, where she was a Wang spokesperson at the Karenna Gore Wedding and the 69th Academy Awards.
In February, 2004, Burch began her own label, known then as "TRB by Tory Burch" and was an instant success, even receiving an endorsement from Oprah Winfrey. This same year, Burch opened her flagship store in New York's NoLita neighborhood in Manhattan. The store sold out in its first day of operation. The Tory Burch line has many stores across America and is sold in high-end department stores. Burch has designed for many of the social elite and has received numerous fashion awards.
The Tory Burch line has been described as "Preppy-boho" with its caftans, ballet flats, and cardigans. Burch pulls inspiration from the design of 1950s and 60s fashions and strives to create versatile fashion that can be worn by working women and socialites alike. Her designs are popular among celebrities and are often worn on the popular television show, Gossip Girl.
In 2007, there was a waiting list to buy her fashions and in 2008, Burch beat such prominent designers as Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs for the Council of Fashion Designers of America Designer of the Year Award. She also won an award from the Accessories Council of Excellence and the Rising Star Award.
