Tom Ford studied art history at New York University, but dropped out his first year and began studying at Parson's School of Design. Ford became a fixture at Studio 54 and eventually spent six months in Paris, where he became an intern at Chloe. After graduating from Parson's, Ford began work for American-designer Cathy Hardwick, with whom he was employed as a design assistant for two years. In 1988, Ford went to work for Perry Ellis. In 1990 Ford was hired at the faltering Gucci Company as chief women's ready-to-wear designer. By 1993, Ford was in charge of designing eleven lines for Gucci. In 1994, Ford became creative director of Gucci and was credited with adding glamour back into fashion by producing Halston-style designs. During his time at Gucci, Ford increased sales by 90%, and by 1999, the company was valued at $4.3 billion.
Ford was then named creative director of the Saint-Laurent house when it was acquired by Gucci. During this time, he marketed extremely successful advertising campaigns for the YSL fragrances and was awarded the Council of Fashion Designers Award. In 1994, Ford left the Gucci group and opened his own fashion house named Tom Ford.
The Tom Ford fashion house began with a line of accessories, and now covers menswear, beauty, eyewear and accessories. He also created a fragrance line in 2006. The flagship Tom Ford store opened on April 12, 2007 on New York's Madison Avenue. He has gone onto opening boutiques in Switzerland and Canada.
