History of Kate Spade
Katy Brosnahan began as an accessories editor at Mademoiselle magazine. She left the magazine in 1991 when she decided to create her own line of stylish and sensible handbags. Kate browsed local flea markets and began to research various styles, fabrics and production costs involved in creating her own line. Kate married salesperson Andy Spade and changed her professional name to Kate Spade. The couple launched their "Kate Spade Handbags" line in 1993 and soon began to add other accessories such as stationary, shoes, perfume, eyewear, pajamas, and personal organizers as well as a home collection as part of the "Kate Spade At Home" line. The duo also added a men's wear brand called "Jack Spade."
Kate Spade opened its first shop in New York City's SoHo district, with follow up stores opening in major cities across the country as well as international stores in Tokyo, Japan. They currently have 46 stores in the United States and over 12 stores across Asia. Since its inception, the brand has exceeded $200 million in sales.
Kate Spade Handbag's are famous around the globe for their fine craftsmanship and utility of function. Kate Spade has won numerous awards throughout her career. 1996 saw Akte receiving "America's New Fashion Talent in Accessories" award and in 1998 she was named the "Best Accessory Designer of the Year." In 2004, Kate Spade won three design awards from House Beautiful, Bon Appetit and Elle Décor.
