About Fossil
Founded in 1984, Fossil began as Overseas Products International with a main focus of retro-looking watches. In 1990, they began to use the name Fossil, a nickname for the founder's father, and added leather goods and the Relic line of watches to the brand. In 2001, Fossil acquired the rights to Zodiac, a Swiss Watch brand that had been in operation since 1882. Fossil then set about changing the look of Zodiac watches to reflect a retro modern 1970s style in a high end watch. Fossil added high end designer watches with the 2004 purchase of the Michele Watch line. Fossil has also used technology to its advantage.
In 2006, the company released a wrist PDA, which is a small palm-based PDA worn like a watch in addition to a watch with caller ID. They also teamed up with the NFL in 2006 to create official watch collections for each team. Fossil was so successful with its own brands that other, high-end brands such as Burberry, Marc Jacobs, DKNY, and Phillipe Starck came to Fossil to create licensed watch lines. They have received awards for "Most Effective Use of Online Creative" and "Best of Show" in 2006.
Fossil has also moved beyond watches to produce collectibles, many of which are based on popular films or pop culture characters such as Batman, Elvis Presley, Wonder Woman and Star Wars.
