In 1925, husband and wife team Edoardo and Adele Fendi opened a small leather goods and fur workshop in Italy. The shop was an immediate success due to the new middle class formed during the postwar period as well as the quality of the goods. In 1932, the couple opened a bigger shop in a commercial center and the Fendi name began to spread. The second generation of Fendis took over the business in 1946. During this period, the five Fendi sisters at the helm help to redefine ideas of how women should dress. In 1965, Fendi begins working with Karl Lagerfeld, then a young designer who would eventually become the head designer for Chanel. Lagerfeld created the double FF Fendi logo and reinterprets the traditional ideas of wearing and crafting fur. The company began to use new colors, tanning procedures and cuts to re-imagine fur. As a result of this early experimentation, Fendi is today considered the leader in fur fashion.
In 1966, Fendi presents its first couture line which meets with immediate success. During the late 1960s, Marvin Traub, president of Bloomingdale's, discovers Fendi bags and brings them to New York. The same year, Fendi presents its collection to the leading distributor of Japanese luxury items and begins its expansion into the Japanese market. In 1969, Fendi debuts its first ready-to-wear collection showcasing furs at reasonable prices, handbags as functional fashion accessories and printed, meshed, and tinted leather items. It is not until 1984 that the Fendi brand expands to include jeans, glasses, gloves and other accessories.
1985 marks sixty years in business and twenty years of the Lagerfeld and Fendi partnership. To celebrate this historic anniversary, Fendi creates the first "fashion" exhibit ever shown in a national museum in Italy. One year later, the president of Italy honors Paolo Fendi with the title of "cavaliere del lavoro." In 1987, the third generation of Fendis takes the reigns and moves to create a new line, Fendissime, that includes fur as well as sportswear and accessories targeted towards a younger demographic. The 1980s end with Fendi opening its flagship store in the United States on Fifth Avenue, New York.
The 1990s begins with the introduction of the Fendi menswear and accessories line. In 1994, Carla Fendi is named President of the Boards and admits the third generation to the Board of Directors. By the end of the 1990s, Fendi has amassed over 380 employees with 100 boutiques, two direct stores in Rome and New York and 600 points of sale.
