About Christian Dior

Influential fashion designer Christian Dior was born in Granville, Normandy in 1905. He attended da Ecole des Sciences Politiques from 1920 to 1925 according to his family's wishes. His wealthy family had hopes of Christian becoming a diplomat, however Christian's desires laid in the arts, specifically in the area of fashion. He began his career by selling sketches on the streets for 10 cents each, and after leaving school, he received money from his father to open a small art gallery, selling the works of such high profile artists as Pablo Picasso. However, when the Dior family faced a financial crisis with the closing of the family business, Christian was forced to close his gallery and eventually entered the army. Dior finally reentered the Fashion arena when he began working for the fashion house of Lucien Lelong in 1942. During this time, Dior dressed the wives of Nazi officers as well as French sympathizers. In October of 1946, Dior opened his own fashion house financed by the cotton fabric magnate, Marcel Boussac.

Dior's first line, named Corolle (French for petal), were different than the usual boxy, fabric restrictive styles of the time. Instead, Dior's designs were voluptuous and he became known as the master of shape and silhouettes. His line used boned, defining fabrics along with hip-padding and corsets combined with petticoats, giving each model a curvaceous silhouette. At first blush, women of the time did not embrace the designs as more leg was shown and more fabric was used during a wartime shortage of fabric. However, by the end of World War II, Dior's "New Look" began to gain success and helped to put Paris in the forefront of the fashion world.

In the 1950s, Dior continued his role as fashion trendsetter with his collection of classic suits, ballerina-length skirts and A, H, and Y line dresses. During this same time, Dior hired Yves Saint Laurent as an assistant, who became head designer after Dior's sudden death in October of 1957. In 1960, with Laurent called to military duty, Marc Bohan took over as head designer and remained in power until Gianfranco Ferre took his place in 1989. Though there was much discussion as to who would take over after Ferre's reign, fashion "enfant terrible," John Galliano was eventually chosen to take over the Dior line. Dior's parent company, LVMH, wanted a designer that would reinvigorate the Dior brand and their decision paid off. Galliano's designs embraced those of Dior himself in his romantic and feminine designs, emphasizing luxury and detail, and rocketed Dior into its highest level of success in years.
