The Bottega Veneta line began in Vincenza, Italy in 1966. Founders Michele Taddei and Ranzo Zengiaro began their company with the motto, "when your own initials are enough." Based on the ideals of craftsmanship, functionality, design, and high quality materials, Bottega Veneta is best known for its signature leather goods, such as handbags, wallets, and luggage. The company quickly became known for its standard of luxury, becoming one of the world's premier luxury brands of women and men's ready-to-wear clothing, fine jewelry, furniture and more, by using master Italian craftsmen as well as highly skilled ateliers. Bottega Veneta collaborates with artisans to combine their design ascetic with traditional skills and materials. This combination of innovation and traditional craftsmanship can most notably be seen in the house's signature intrecciato woven leather.
In February of 2001, Bottega Veneta was bought by the Gucci Group which installed Tomas Maier as creative director. In 2006, Bottega Veneta continued to demonstrate their commitment to true, traditional craftsmanship by opening a school to train leather artisans. Most recently, Bottega Veneta has teamed with luxury department store Bergdorf Goodman to create a store wide installation of all items offered in the line, in addition to an entire room dedicated to home goods. "The World of Bottega Veneta" will be the first time the entire line can be seen anywhere outside of the Bottega Veneta boutiques; a rare opportunity to view the fine craftsmanship and innovative design detail of the line as presented through the singular perspective of Bergdorf Goodman. In addition, Bottega Veneta will be celebrating the 30 year anniversary of its signature handbag, known as "the knot." "The Knot: A Retrospective" will be a traveling exhibition demonstrating the various incarnations of the original design of the iconic handbag. Since 1966, Bottega Veneta has continued to offer ready to wear clothing, handbags, luggage and wallets and has added fine jewelry, fragrance, eyewear, and home items to their line.
