The History of Alexander McQueen

Designer Alexander McQueen dropped out of school and began an apprenticeship with Savile Row tailors, Anderson and Sheppard, at the age of 16. While still a teen, McQueen's early customers included Mikhail Gorbachev and Prince Charles. He eventually went back to school and earned his Masters degree in Fashion Design from Central Saint Martin's College of Art and Design. His final graduation collection was in fact bought by fashion stylist Isabella blow.

Once graduated, McQueen quickly became an influential and respected designer. He succeeded designer John Galliano as Chief Designer at Givenchy in 1996 and worked there until March of 2001. In 2000, the Gucci Group acquired 51% of the Alexander McQueen name and appointed McQueen Creative Director. Since then, McQueen has opened stores in London, Milan, and New York, as well as launched his perfumes, Kingdom and MyQueen. McQueen's line is available in 39 countries and offers men and women’s ready-to-wear, along with accessories and eyewear.

McQueen has also partnered with various companies outside of his own line. In 2005, he worked with Puma to create a new line of sneakers. In 2006 he created McQ, a denim-based ready to wear line made and sold by SINV spa. In 2007, Samsonite worked with McQueen to create modern travel gear. McQueen also became the first designer to take part in MAC's cosmetic collection created by designers. In July, 2008 McQueen opened his internet store where shoppers can purchase pieces from his collections.

McQueen's early collections laid the foundation for his reputation as a controversial designer, earning him the title "the hooligan of English fashion." He is known for his shocking, unconventional runway shows, such as a recreation of a shipwreck for his spring 2003 collection, spring 2005's human chess game and a life-sized hologram of model Kate Moss in 2006. Throughout his career, Alexander McQueen has been known for working with contrasting ideas. His clothes are romantic and severe, modern and romantic. His collections are seen as emotional with passionate attention to British tailoring, Haute Couture workmanship and Italian finish and manufacturing.

McQueen was one of the youngest designers to win British Designer of the year, which he won four times. In 2003, her Majesty the Queen awarded him the title Most Excellent Commander of the British Empire (CBE.) McQueen was also named International Designer of the Year at the Council of Fashion Designer Awards, received a Fashion Directors Award for his McQ line and was named Menswear Designer of the Year by GQ in September 2007.
